Off the Grid Living in Suburbia

So I have been bitten by the off the grid living bug. Not for any environmental reason per say but more for a personal self sufficiency plan. I am and always have been a dreamer. So I have been doing some research as to how best to embark on becoming truly self reliant. I live in suburbia and currently have decided that the best course of action is to attempt this experiment under my current living arrangement. In my 6500 square foot lot with my little 1000 square foot shot gun style ranch. Remember you have to crawl before you can walk.
I have a modest goal to start. Grow as much of my own produce this year as possible. This shouldn’t be impossible by any means. I have devised a plan to create a compost bin and with the amount of rain we get in Rhode Island I should be able to save enough run off to water my garden effectively. I am also looking into wind and solar power. I think I will start with the wind option because it seems cheaper to dabble in to start. My goal is to eventually eliminate the use of electricity from the grid. I understand that I will need to remain connected when it comes to water because I am not permitted to drill a well in my yard and am hooked up to city water. It is of course suburbia so some concessions will have to be made… I will keep everyone posted on the progress as this should be both challenging and enjoyable.

Thank you Faux Blizzard

I want to thank you Faux Blizzard for the following… I was allowed to wear jeans to work today and tomorrow and 2, my class was canceled tonight. That being said…… I hope this might make people on planet earth a lil less on the wimpy side in the future and realize that we live in New England and we get snow…. Suck it up peeps and stop being Pussies. No need to cancel the planets activities due to inclement weather… What happened to people just going out and doing it regardless?? I guess those days are over… Now it’s all about graduated licenses for kids under 18 or 20 or some shit…. full body armor to ride a bicycle or roller blade, rubberize playgrounds with faux mulch so kids won’t skin a knee on the blacktop… What’s next? a law that all kids are required to be wrapped in nerf to go outside and play? We are raising our youth to be complete wimps…It’s sad….

Passive Income e-How style

So I have done a bunch of research and am now firmly on the e-how wagon. If you don’t know anything about e-how i encourage you to check it out at http://www.ehow.com/members/busey.html?view=3rd For those of you who have an idea about e-how here are my stats so far. I have written 22 articles as of this post in about a 2 month time frame. roughly 10 articles per month. Not very consist at all. The first month December which I only had a few articles I made $1.17 Jan $2.88 and 7 full days in to Feb I have made .85 cents. At this rate it looks as though it will be the third month I doubled my passive income. Now trust me I realize we are talking pennies but in the world of compounding and residual income it is a very powerful concept. I am coming up with goals that I will be posting soon for earning targets I want to hit based upon the amount of articles I am turning out.

Until then, remember to drive fast, hills and corners but always keep the rubber side down…..

What to ask when buying a used motorcycle

Here are a few tips on what to ask when you are deciding to buy a used motorcycle. The first thing I need to stress is never buy a motorcycle just from seeing pictures. I know I might get flack from the auction website fans of the world but frankly I don’t care. If you haven’t seen it and rode it don’t buy it. Period.
The distance you are from where the bike is located geographically is often critical when it comes to agreeing on price. If you live hours away from the location of the bike then the seller usually knows you want to buy it that day and will play hardball with you. If he knows you live a block away there is a good chance you are going to be able to negotiate some with him because he knows you will just walk away and that you don’t have a 5 hour drive roundtrip invested already into maybe buying this bike.
The third thing you need to understand is what you should ask on the phone of the seller prior to even seeing the bike. This is doubly important on older model motorcycles.

Here is a quick list of things I ask when i’m on that initial phone inquiry about a motorcycle I found in the paper or swapper mag, internet, etc.

* What’s the prior history of the bike?
* Are you the sole owner? If not when and at what mileage did you pick it up at?
* What did you pay for it? Never be afraid to ask this question…..
* Why are you selling it? (the more verbose the story the more likely it is a total lie and can be a way to gauge the trustworthiness of the person selling you the bike)
* DO you winterize it? (if there are a lot of pauses without a clear concise answer on this one, again it’s not a good sign of the sellers credibility)
* Are there any know problems with these models? They will either be honest and say, “yes” or I don’t know, or “No”… “No” is the worst answer because every model year of every bike ever has some sort of a know issue that pops up and the bike is known for. (for example: I have a 2003 Harley FXDL and every 4-8k miles the brake light stops working. It’s not the bulb it’s not the wiring but it’s actually a 10 dollar part called, the rear brake light sensor) It’s so simple to replace and if you do it right you don’t even have to bleed the brakes. It’s just a part that is known to repeatedly be problematic on my year and model Harley.

Once you’ve decided that you are still interested in seeing the bike then set up a time to go see it. Make sure to bring a buddy along. Two sets of eyes are always better than one. I’ll be writing up what to look for when inspecting the bike in my next post.

Dear Home Depot

Go to Home Depot to buy a piece of chain….kid who has clearly never even seen a chain let alone cut a piece of chain tells me he has to cut the length for me….. Result… he fillets his hand open and I send him off cause he’s bleeding all over my chain and the aisle… And who ends up cutting the piece of chain with of course zero issues??? Yup, I do… Dear Home Depot-take your rules and reg’s and stick ‘em up your arse. Either that or make all your employees wear chainmail since they are your biggest hazard in the whole store. Oh and to the Home Depot employee with the filleted hand… hope this doesn’t eff up your world of warcraft long weekend…..

Sincerely,
Busey
