Retirement

So I have a few thoughts on retirement I am going to share. First, it has always been instilled in me that you work hard, long, hours for 30 or 40 years and go without so you can save your nest egg for retirement years. Now, lets just get down to brass tacks here….. This thought process is insane correct???

First off, why in the world would anyone think that by refraining from enjoyment, i.e. restricting lifestyle, by working more hours, jobs etc, in place of free time to do what you’d like for the, “chance at retirement” in 30 or 40 years is the way to go. I know that I am not the most fit nor am I a pinnacle of health at 31 but I must admit I sure think I am in a lot better physical condition now than I will be at 65 or 75. Therefore, why would I want to go without things I enjoy now during my arguably most healthy years vs. my less desirable later years? Sorry, older folk if I am lucky I will be your age some day too. My point is, I spent from age 12 through age 30 working every weekend, holiday, overtime etc. I thought if I just could get a few more hours overtime, or just pick up another job I could save more etc. etc. I thought people who didn’t work insane amounts of hours were pussies. Now I realize I was the one being a pussy for not going after my dreams sooner. It’s good thing I realized early enough that the path to enjoyment isn’t paved with dollar bills….

The concept of retirement is dated. It’s like the concept of working for the same company for your whole life. It’s not that the idea is necessarily wrong. It’s just it isn’t as practical anymore. Technology has made working for the same company for your entire career near impossible. But that is for another post…. More thoughts on retirement later….
